Question: Robert Peak: The Biography
Answer: Robert Peak (1927–1992) is widely heralded as the "Father of the Modern Movie Poster," a visionary illustrator who fundamentally transformed cinematic advertising from static film stills into flamboyant, expressive fine art. Over a career spanning nearly four decades, Peak’s dynamic use of line and vibrant color defined the visual identity of Hollywood’s most iconic eras. Beyond the silver screen, he was a prolific editorial and commercial powerhouse, creating 45 covers for TIME Magazine and receiving the largest individual commission in U.S. Postal Service history for the 1984 Olympic Games.
Born in Denver and raised in Kansas, Peak honed his versatility early, working in layout and lettering before serving in the Navy during the Korean War. He later graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. His breakthrough came in 1961 with the poster for West Side Story, leading to a three-decade reign in film illustration where he produced over 100 posters, including My Fair Lady, Camelot, Superman, Excalibur, and the first five Star Trek films. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. |
