Artist Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: Yankel Ginzburg Biography

Answer: From the Steppes to the Smithsonian

Yankel Ginzburg (born 1945) is a Russian-born Israeli-American master whose "no-smoke" career is a study in evolution. Born Yuri Zhukov in Kazakhstan to parents who were high-ranking Soviet officers, Ginzburg only discovered his Jewish heritage at age nine before the family escaped to Israel in 1957. A prodigy, he became the youngest student ever accepted to the Institute of Art in Tel Aviv, graduating with honors at nineteen. After arriving in the U.S. in 1968, he was honored with a solo exhibition at the Washington Gallery of Art, sponsored by Yitzhak Rabin and First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. Ginzburg’s style—often termed "Post-Cubist" or "Constructivist"—evolved from mystical symbolism into a sophisticated mastery of light and form. His work is globally recognized, held in the permanent collections of the Marc Chagall Museum, the Cairo Museum, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and he was commissioned by President Reagan for the Air and Space Bicentennial poster.

At Herndon Fine Art, we have been a primary source for Yankel Ginzburg for nearly 40 years. Our collection is a vetted selection of Vetted Consignments and Vetted Dealer Networks, with a particular focus on his out-of-print 1980s serigraphs and his iconic acrylic sculptures. Because Ginzburg’s acrylic work relies on precise internal reflections, our vetting process ensures that the material remains crystal-clear without "crazing" or yellowing. We stand behind every signature with our A+ BBB commitment.

Question: What is an "Acrylic Serigraphic Sculpture"?

Answer: This is Ginzburg’s signature technical innovation. He prints complex serigraphs (silkscreens) directly onto multiple layers of acrylic or Lucite, then assembles them into 3D structures. As you walk around the piece, the images shift and overlap, creating a "fourth dimension" of movement. At Herndon Fine Art, we verify that these pieces are complete with their original rotating bases or adjustable panels.

Question: Why is the "Zimmerman Editions" blind stamp important?

Answer: From 1979 to 1996, Ginzburg worked exclusively with Zimmerman Editions Ltd., the premier atelier for high-end serigraphy. His market remains elite for collectors of 20th-century abstraction; while original large-scale canvases have realized substantial sums, his hand-signed Lucite sculptures like Day for Night have recently realized up to $8,000 at auction.

Question: What is the "Post-Cubist" influence in his work?

Answer: Like Picasso or Braque, Ginzburg breaks his subjects into geometric planes, but he adds a "no-smoke" modern layer of airbrushed gradients and metallic inks. For a collector, this creates a bridge between classical Modernism and contemporary graphic art. We use our 40 years of experience to identify these technical era markers in your database.

Question: Why is "Acrylic/Lucite Sculpture" his top tier?

Answer: Ginzburg (b. 1945) is a pioneer of mixed-media acrylic sculpture. His record price for a Lucite work (Day for Night - David's Tower) reached $8,000 in 2024. His "Summit Clock" and "Wild Trees" are his most recognized 3D icons.

Question: What is the value difference between "Original Oil" and "Print"?

Answer: While his 3D sculptures are high-tier, his signed serigraphs (like Fantasy) typically realize $200–$500. For a dealer, his original "Acrylic Mixed Media" paintings are the most liquid for modern architectural spaces.

Question: Does "Signature Location" matter in acrylics?

Answer: Yes. Ginzburg typically signs within the acrylic layers or on the base. Collectors should check for "Internal Bubbling" or "Clouding" within the Lucite, which can occur if the piece was stored in extreme temperatures.

Question: How do "Vetted Consignment" and "Vetted Dealer Network" listings differ?

Answer: At Herndon Fine Art, we believe in talking to people, not marketing smoke. Vetted Consignments (RH code) are pieces sourced from private estates—often original owners from the 1980s Washington D.C. art scene—that we have physically inspected. Vetted Dealer Network (TAC or AE) listings come from our trusted partners. Regardless of the source, our reputation stands behind every signature.

Question: Why should I consult with Herndon Fine Art for a Ginzburg purchase?

Answer: Because Ginzburg’s acrylic works are heavy and multi-component, they are frequently susceptible to "chipping" or surface scratching if handled incorrectly. We use our experience to check for these structural flaws and verify the presence of the Immerman or Zimmerman blind stamps. We don't do "shopping cart" sales; we want to talk with you directly to ensure the "luminous" quality of the piece is perfect for your collection.
